Companies and institutions have started donating towards this year’s Farmers Day celebration.

On Friday, Ghana Commercial Bank made a cheque donation of GH¢5,000 with Unique Insurance Company donating a cash of GH¢2,000 in addition to a GH¢5,000 personal insurance cover for the overall best farmer.

Wienco, a fertiliser manufacturing company, was the next to present 20 pieces of matadi sprayers, 20 cartons of insecticides, 500 pieces of T Shirts, and 50 boxes of Safari hats, all valued at GH¢22,800.

In addition, the company gave GH¢5000 cash.

The presentations were made respectively by Mr Emmanuel Kwarteng, Public Relations Officer of Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), Mr Victor Kusi Yeboah, Managing Director (MD) of Unique Insurance Company, and Mrs Helen Cindy Obeng-Okon, Marketing Manager of Wienco.

In brief remarks, the donors said they see the donations as part of their social responsibilities towards the gallant farmers of Ghana.

They said Ghanaian farmers had kept aloft the country’s economy running for a very long time, and deserved to be recognised and treated well.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Ernest Akubuor Debrah, who received the items and the monies, expressed appreciation to the companies for their kind gesture.

He said celebrating Farmers Day of such a magnitude required a lot of money, and, therefore, soliciting assistance from individuals, companies and institutions, was in order.

The minister said this year’s Farmers Day would be celebrated at Techiman on November 7, 2008 instead of December 4, because that day would be too close to election day which is on December 7, 2008.

Quotable Quotes

One should guard against preaching to young people success in the customary form as the main aim in life. The most important motive for work in school and in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result, and the knowledge of the value of the result to the community.
